Paper submissions for the Spring 2023 volume of The Equitation: MCHS Annual Academic Journal are now open, and must be submitted by 1 May 2023.
Paper Length and Limitations
Submission for both Presentation and Publication are open to the entire Costa community, including students, alumni, staff, faculty, and administration in order to foster a school-wide culture of learning and inquiry. Papers and presentations in any subject area are welcome.
For publication, submissions will be categorized as such:
Seminar or Symposium Papers: roughly 1000-3000 words, excluding titles and headings, citations and footnotes, and bibliographies
Research or Academic Papers: up to 5000 words, excluding titles and headings, citations and footnotes, appendices or graphics, and bibliographies
These papers may also be submitted for presentation (Spring 2023)--however, presenters need to select content from their work and use audience-centered design techniques to present in the 15-20 minutes allotted, regardless of original paper length--for shorter papers, this may include demonstrations, activities, discussion questions for participants in the live session, etc.
Each author is limited to one submission for each year's conference, but may submit again in subsequent years. Submission does not guarantee publication or selection for presentation. Upon submission, authors will be asked if they intend to present and publish, or publish only. Specific papers that are already included in publication or have been presented in prior years may be submitted again--in other words, acceptance will only be granted to works which have not been accepted prior. Authors may choose to resubmit works that have not been accepted in years prior, though it may be recommended that authors revise in order to make the work more attractive for selection committee consideration.
Submission Requirements
Authors can submit to the form linked below, which asks for the following information:
name of author
email address
position (student, staff, alumni)
paper title
subject area and general topic of inquiry
paper word count (excluding title, headings, bibliographic information, etc. as noted above)
submission consideration: for publication and presentation, or for presentation only
doc file with the full paper: please remove headings (last names, teachers, class periods, dates, etc.) from the submitted document for selection committee blind review [please do not submit in PDF so that comments can be made for revision.]
Submissions may also require further revision prior to publication--authors will be provided specific information if this is the case.
At this time, submissions will only be accepted from Mira Costa students, alumni, staff, faculty, and administration. We hope to open both the publication and Conference to surrounding institutions in the South Bay in the future.
Acceptance for Publication and/or Presentation: Next Steps
After submissions close, and papers are reviewed, the selection committee will notify authors of their acceptance--upon acceptance, authors will receive information regarding the next steps in the process. If acceptances are conditional upon review, authors will be notified of necessary revisions and may resubmit for full acceptance (for publication, specifically). Presenters will also be asked at this time if they intend to opt in to session recording.
Accepted authors and presenters will then be asked to supply a paper and/or presentation abstract of no more than 250 words. Abstracts will be included in the official publication, and--for those presenting--will also posted in the Program for the Conference, available to registrants on the Conference Hub. Presenters and must also include presentation materials (slides, visuals, handouts) for review and posting to the Conference Hub prior to the event--these will be made available to all participants, regardless of the status of recording for each session.
Failure to submit an abstract and/or presentation materials by the deadline may subject the publication or presentation to cancellation. Please ensure proper materials are completed and submitted in a timely manner in order to avoid such cancellation.
Declaration of Authorship, Authenticity, and Academic Integrity
Submitting for publication and/or publication certifies that the submission is in fact entirely the work of the author, and does not defame anyone or infringe anyone's intellectual property rights. Submission means works are subject to review for plagiarism or other academic violations, making the work subject to Mira Costa's Ethics Policy, which can be found in the recent additions of the student handbook.
